Because of the mate threat Qxb2#, there isn’t time for the natural attack fxe7. But, there is time for:
1. Rg8+ (not Rxh7+ allowing escape in h-file) Rxg8 (Kxg8?? Rg1+ Kh8 fxe7#)
2. fxe7+ Rg7 (only)
3. bxc3!
I can’t see how to avoid this defencive 3rd move.
So far, white has lost a quality, but next, white threats the terrible 4. Rg1. King has no escape, and there is also e8=Q.
3. … Rcg8 (enforced)
4. Rg1! Qa8/Qb8/Qc8 (if not supporting 8th rank, e8=Q will come)
5. Qf6! e5
6. fxe5 …
7. Bd4!! …
8. e6
and the diagonal pressure at g7 looks desicive, since black cant play Qf8 to defend it.
I have seen this position plenty of times. But always thought that White was Anderssen !!!
1. Rg8+! Kxg8
2. Rg1+ Kh8
3. fxe7+ f6
4. exf8+ Rxf8
5. Qxc3 +- white has an extra piece.
1. Rg8+! Rxg8
2. fxe7! Rg7
3. Rg1! Qxb2+
4. Kd1 Qb1+
5. Bc1 and white mates. Rcg8
6. Qxg7+! Rxg7
7. e8=R+ Rg8
8. Rxg8#
