This was the actual position in the Morozevich – Maslak game in the final round of the 2008 Russian Championship. White just played 48.Re1. Black had a knockout punch move here. Can you find it? Black missed it and lost the game in a heart wrenching fashion later on.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Ray Gordon is dead.
e1?
is it following ?
48. ….. Bf4
..Qd4 probably.
Qd4 looks good to me.
…Bf4 looks like the winning move
Isn’t Qd4 answered by Rxe2
What about QxR followed by BxB?
Is it OK?
1..Qd4 2Rxe2 Rxe2 3Qxe2 Qa1+
After QxR … BxB Qxh6 seems deadly
Isn’t Qd4 answered by Rxe2
After 48…Qd4 49.Rxe2 Rxe2 50.Qxe2 Qa1+ seems to win the bishop.
What about QxR followed by BxB?
48…Qxe1+ 49.Bxe1 Bxe1 50.Qxh6 and White’s in command.
Rats, I have to learn to type (or perhaps analyze) faster. Anons 4:33 and 4:34 have both beaten me on time.
48…Qd4 cannot win – 49.Qxh6!
48…Bf4! with Qg3 plan wins
Why not Qf1+? Then RxQ and e2xf1#
Oops, I see it now, Qxf1, so it is not mate.
But then Re1 wins.
So the complete winning sequence is:
…Qf1+
Rxf1 exf1=Q+
Qxf1 Re1
Saw it in about 10 seconds. Hey, for once I’m smarter than a GM!
No wait, that @#$%ing bishop on d2 ruins it all. Never mind, I lost.
This is such a stupid way of us commenting on a game. Blog, refresh, … for idiots.

What you have a better way to communicate moves? Smoke Signals? Hidden Masonic messages on US Currency? The vibrating toilet seat Danailov had installed in Kramniks chair?
Please tell us!
Oh yes, please refresh this page.
…Bf4
48…Rd8 should be sufficient, too.
…Rd8? Bc3+-
…Bf4 is much better
H
and what about …Qd4?! Qxh6
what then?
…Bf4 looks good to me
H
48… Bf4 49.Qb5 Re3 with the idea Rxh3+ still covering the squares e8 and b8 seems to do the trick. If 50.Bxe3 Qxe1+ 51.Bg1 then 51… Qxg1+ wins on the spot. The alternative 49.Qa5 doesn’t help white due to the obvious Qf1+…
looks good, I was looking at … Bf4, attacking Bd2, protecting h6 from the wh Q and making room for Qg3.
H
48 … Bf4
49.Bxf4 is not good but best
49…Qxe1+
50.Kh2 {forced} Qh4 {making way}
51.Bd2 e1=Q
52.Bxe1 {clearly} Rxe1 {ditto}
53.Qa8+ {Q needed at home} Kxg7
54.Qf3 and Black has enough
The toughest defense by White looks like:
48…Bf4
49.Bxf4 Qxe1+
50.Kh2 Re6
51.Qd3 Qd1
52.Bd2 e1=Q
53.Bxe1 Qxd3
54.cxd3 Rxe1
… but the three pawns are no match for the rook.
Ray Gordon, the pick up artist?
48…Rd8 49.Bc3 is NOT +-, because of 49…Qe3. Now the Re1 is attacked but needs to stay, to prevent e2-e1Q etc.
48…Rd8 49.Bc3 Qe3 50.Qxe2 (50.Qa5 Rc8) 50…Qxe2 51.Rxe2 Rd1+ and Black must give the bishop.
48…Bf4 is stronger, but as mentioned before, 48…Rd8 should be sufficient for Black to win, too.
48….Rd8
49 Qxh6 !
Ray Gordon, the pick up artist?
The same. Comcast destroyed his profile.
He is no more.
What is the trouble with Re6?
(What is the trouble with Re6?)
Qc8+ is unpleasant followed by Bc3+
Te6
Qc8+
Kxg7
Bc3+
Tf6
Then what?
48….Rd8
49 Qxh6 !
48…Rd8 49.Qxh6 Qf1+ and mate next.
Te6
Qc8+
Kxg7
Bc3+
Tf6
Then what?
48…Re6 49.Qc8+ Kxg7 50.Bc3+ Rf6 51.Qg4+ Kh7 52.Qe4+. If Black tries to dodge the perpetual with 52…Rf5, White simply crawls into a shell with 53.Rg1 and Black can’t make any progress.
…f6
So after all these posts what have we decided is the best continuation for black??
I like 48…Bf4
It may be a good idea for “anonymous” to use an identifier for posts so responders can use a reference on reply.

Qd1x + is the winning move for black.
I saw 1. …Qxd1+, 2 Bxd1 Bxd1 and white cannot avoid the promotion. I.e.: 3. Qc6 Re6 4. Qc8 Kxg7
