SAO PAULO, Brazil (June 22) – Brazilian media say soccer legend Pele was held up at gunpoint, and robbed by a band of youths armed with knives and guns. They took a gold necklace, cell phone, and watch.
The media reports say it happened back on June 13th in a slum near the city of Santos, but wasn’t made public until today.
Pele was riding in the passenger seat of a car when it was stopped by at least 10 young men.
The soccer legend is a legally declared national treasure, according to the Brazilian government. In 1999 he was voted Athlete of the Century by the world’s national Olympic committees.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Brasil is known for crime. When I visited Brasil a few years ago, I was told by the hotel not to carry any valuable in the street.
If Brazil is known by crimes, U.S.A. and other countries of the Europe are known by stealing Latin America and Africa during the last centuries.
Stupid!!
Well, Brasil is known for its street gangs and robbery – what is stupid about stating the truth?! While crimes are being committed everywhere around the world that particular crime is unfortunately very common in Brasil. Friends of mine were robbed there, too. So, NOT stupid, even though you might not like to hear it.
Pele has more gold, watches, and cell phones than downtown Tokyo.
What could have been worse is if Tom Cruise jumped him and forced him at gun point to join Scientology. That would have been bad.
No worries.
My dog has worms and drags its butt on the carpet.
What’s very bad is having your life threatened with a gun even if they took nothing.
For instance shoplifters stealing those goods is bad enough- but it is so much worse to have a gun to your head.

The gun shouldn’t be an issue. I once had my life threatened with a 44oz glass bottle of Malt Liquor.
I was working in a convenience store in high school and the guy went into the beer cooler ad pulled out a 44oz glass bottle. He ran up to the register and threatened to kill me with it if I didn’t let him take the beer.
I said “OK”. I told the police what happened and they told me they arrested a guy drinking beer from an uncovered bottle. So, then he had robbery and assult added to his charges.
The world works correctly sometimes.
No offense, dude, but there is some distinction between being threatened by a bottle or a gun.

Absolutely! A gun cannot hold nearly enough beer than a bottle can hold!
