Southwest High chess team wins second consecutive national title
A jubilant coach announced on Sunday that Minneapolis Southwest High School’s chess team won the national high school chess championships – for the second year in a row.
After winning the state championship March 18, nine members of the Southwest team traveled to Kansas City, Mo., for the nationals this past weekend.
Southwest played in the U1500 division, the second-toughest division at the tournament, according to Southwest’s coach Alex Adams.
Southwest sophomore Nick Graves took top individual honors; sophomore Laura Howard, the top girl player at the state championships, finished 25th at the nationals.
