‘Chess organisers made wrong moves’

Abu Dhabi: Garry Kasparov said that chess failed to cash in on the famous rivalry between him and Anatoly Karpov in the ’80s and ’90s of the last century to catapult it into a modern and professional sport.
“Great rivalries help push sport like the [Mohammad] Ali-Foreman [George] duel in boxing and the [Bjorn] Borg-McEnroe [John] one in tennis. Likewise, there was a momentum in chess during the ’80s but the game’s organisers failed to use it to spread the game’s popularity,” Kasparov told Gulf News on the sidelines of a lecture assignment.
“The Fischer-Spassky rivalry presented another chance but unfortunately nothing happened. Today, chess is in a much worse situation as the other sports have all progressed and left this sport far behind,” said the man who was rated world number one for almost two decades.
Wish Vishy the best
Vladimir Kramnik, who deposed Kasparov in 2000, is back to challenge current world champion Viswanathan Anand later this October. On the clash, Kasparov said: “Kramnik is a difficult player and is very solid. He never loses and will prove to be a difficult rival to Anand.”
Kasparov, who defeated Anand to keep the World Championship title in 1995, said: “I am happy Vishy won the world championship. He always deserved to win it. I will be happy if he keeps it after his match with Kramnik for he deserves it.”

Kasparov wishes mean nothing on the Anand vs Kramnik match. Kramnik will crush Anand.
Oh yeah!, When Kasparov says Vishy deserves it, it doesn’t mean anything! Anon 6:25 seems to be a tarot card reader. Will you please predict who will be the next president of US!? How many golds will china win in olympics!?
It is not surprising since Kasparov has sour grapes against Kramnik after Kramnik failed to grant him a rematch
It is remarkable Kasparov says never anything positive of active russian chess players in general.
But then , how could i forget, Kasparov is a sleezy foreign aided/paid think tank creature.
Kramnik made two heavy mistakes in
Kasparov’s view :
-beating “the best player in history” and the biggest ego in history in a match
-not hating Putin or not behaving as a Dostoevsky character : intriguing and doing everything to bring down your own evil god damned bastard country Russia (Piotr Stepanovich – the Possessed)
N.
Well, Kasparov did favour Kramnik before the match with Topalov. He said that Kramnik understands chess better than Topalov.
So you can’t say that he is “a priori” against Kramnik.
P.S.: Nobody will crush anybody. Anybody who says that one player is going to dominate the other doesn’t have a clue (it goes the same for Topalov vs. Kamsky match too)
It is an even match. Can’t wait!
Next President of the US: Barack Obama.
Gold Medals win by China in the next Summer Games: 26.
So what’s your point: Kasparov can predict the future and we can’t???
Is everyone here forgetting the fact that Kramnik is a good friend of Putin and that while Kasparov was running for President Kramnik spoke in favour of Medvevev (Russia’s new president) a couple of times. There are definitely sour grapes between Kasparov and Kramnik.
Soooooo, don’t pay attention to what the sour grandmasters are saying. Take your own time…analyze the games of both players prior to the match…and pick YOUR OWN favorite. Mine is Kramnik so……GO KRAMNIK!!!
Kasparov recognizes Anand as the World Champion because he won the title in a tounament–yet during the 1990s he would not recognize any of the FIDE World Champions who won their titles in knockout tournaments.
His attitude seems a bit hypocritical to me.
For me, Kramnik is still the the World Champion and Anand will not be the World Champion until he beats Kramnik in a match.
Bobby Fischer was not recognized as World Champion when he won the interzonal and candidates matches. He only won the title when he defeated World Champion Boris Spassky in a match.
You compare interzonals with World championship tournament in Mexico??? That is the best you could find?
Define your “classical line” of champions. Not names, but conditions how and when the title can be won or lost. Please be thorough in your definition because “you can only become a champion by defeating the previous champion in a match” is not enough (see Alekhine death)
Organiser didn’t fail, he and Karpov had no charisma and chess is a boring spectator sport.
Kasparov fails to address that he himself had a big share in the decline of chess popularity after 1993.
He and Short broke away from FIDE with their TIMES match in 1993 and this event causes all the problems concerning the World Chess Championships until this very day.
BRUZ
Not true.
He aknowledged that breaking away from FIDE was the biggest mistake in his professional life.
