John BUKY, Education Consultant
Frank HO, Canada certified math teacher This article is published by The Chess Academy, Chicago, USA, June 2008 Research studies have shown that chess can be used as an effective game-based teaching method. However, all the past studies used chess as a separate instructional tool.
There were no math contents in chess instruction provided and there was no math and chess integrated workbook used. This study examined the effect on pupils’ math scores when a truly integrated math and chess workbook was used as an instructional practice workbook.
The results show that the integrated math and chess workbook significantly increased pupils’ math scores between pre-tests and post-tests among grade 1 to grade 8 pupils. Key Words: math and chess; math and chess instruction, math and chess integrated workbook; math and chess integrated workbook; mathematics scores of the students.

Susan why have you deleted the 2 posts questioning the quality/usefulness of this research?
Neither were offensive and represented valid opinions of the posters.
Hi,
I must say I did all that in my chess experiment:

I see that the end of the URL in my previous mal has been cut,
It is : … chess_and_aptitudes.htm
As presented, this study shows nothing about the effect of chess instruction on math skills. For one thing, it is not clear that a proper control group with math instruction only was run. There are also question s about motivational differences, randomization if there were different groups tested, and so on.
This study was conducted to answer a simple question which many parents were wondering if math and chess integrated teaching method could increase children’s math scores. Many parents are now looking for an after-school math program which not only is effective in raising children’s math ability but also is fun to work on it. This experiment seems to offer an alternative after-school math that many parents are looking for. Fun and educational.
Will the math and chess integrated program be effective after my child has gone through the math and chess integrated program, say, 3 months?
Many children have gone through other after-school math programs and some of them are not effective and boring, so whether control group is there or not, they do not care. They only care if the program they are interested is efective or not.
