GM Kramnik (2772) – GM Anand (2783) [D49]
17.10.2008 – World Championship – Game 3
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5 8.Bd3 a6 9.e4 c5 10.e5 cxd4 11.Nxb5 axb5 12.exf6 gxf6 13.0–0 Qb6 14.Qe2 Bb7 15.Bxb5 Bd6 += Even though Black has double pawns and King safety issue, Vishy has compensation and counter play on the Kingside.
16.Rd1 Black does have a number of options here but I prefer the most logical 16…Rg8.
16…Rg8 17.g3 Rg4 I do not believe 17…Rg4 is the most accurate move in this position. This allows 18.Nd2.
18.Bf4 White should have played 18.Nd2 to maintain a small edge. Now 18…Bxf4 19.Rd4 and the position is unclear.
18…Bxf4 19.Nxf4 I think this is a mistake. 19…h5 is looking good for Black. I would have preferred 19.Rxd4.
19…h5 20. Nxe6 fxe6 21. Rxd7 Kf8 22. Qd3 Rg7 += 23.Rxg7 Kxg7 24.gxf4 += After 24…Rd8 Black has more than enough compensation for the 2 pawns. This could be very dangerous for Kramnik.
24…Rd8 25. Qe2 Kh6 26. Kf1 Rg8 27. a4 Bg2+ 28. Ke1 Bh3 29. Ra3 Rg1+ 30. Kd2 Qd4+ 31. Kc2 Bg4 32. f3 Bf5+ 33. Bd3 Bh3 (Anand missed an immediate win with 33… Bxd3+ 34. Rxd3 (34. Qxd3 Rg2+ 35. Kc1 Qxb2+ 36. Kd1 Rg1+) 34… Qc4+ 35. Rc3)
34. a5 Rg2 35. a6 Rxe2+ 36. Bxe2 Bf5+ 37. Kb3 Qe3+ 38. Ka2 Qxe2 39. a7 Qc4+ 40. Ka1 Qf1+ 41. Ka2 Bb1+ {Black wins} 0-1
Anand is taking the important early lead. It is now up to Kramnik to mix things up. We can expect the games to be a lot more exciting now.

The novelty 14…Bb7 looks interesting. Maybe Anand gets good attacking chances.
Susan what you think it is best here? I prefer Rd1 Rg8 g3 Bxf3 Qxf3
Anand took only 3 minutes for first 15 moves
17….Rg4 another novelty by Anand. Seems he is well prepared for this game and on his way to smash Kramnik.
How can there be 2 novelties in the same game? When one has been played, then every move should be novel, right?
Novelty is something out of the ordinary….Did you ever think of a move like Rg4 to be played….everybody was suggesting B*f6!!!
17…Tg4 is a good alternative to 17…Lf3. In my opinion it is even better than 17…Lf3 because Black keeps his good Bishop.
Although the chess engines may say something different. 😉 I don’t have one running here because I’m still at work.
But still I’m interested what the engines are saying. Anyone has Rybka or Fritz running?

Great. Thx a lot!
Feels like 19… h5 20. Nxe6 fxe6 21. Rxd7 is a bit unpleasant for black.
19.Nxd4 h5 20.Nxe6 happened.
Now it’s getting real interesting. The variants shown by the analysis of Rybka look very complicate. I’m curious how much of them the players see on the board.
20…fxe6 21.Rxd7
0.00 from Rybka with main variation:
21… Kf8 22. Qd3 Bxg3 23. hxg3 h4 24. Rd6 Qc5 25. b4 Rxb4 26. Rxe6 hxg3 27. Rxf6+ Ke7 28. Qh7+ Kxf6 29. Qh6+ Ke5 30. Qg7+ Kd6 31. Qd7+ Ke5 32. Qg7+ Kd6 33. Qd7+ Ke5 34. Qg7+ Kd6 35. Qd7+ Ke5 36. Qg7+ Kd6
This is not the Kramnik I knew of for 20 years…
It must be Topalov behind Kramnik today or Kramnik got inplanted some chip in his head…
Draw agreed
22…Rg7! White has nothing. I don’t see why Rg7 is not suggested by Rybka.
Aw, come on!
I really feel like Anand should hire me as his second, because it took me only 5 min to come up with Rg7 while he spent 20 min.
Gee, go on!
Rybka is weak, having many false calculations! Mine is:
24…Rd8 25 Qb3 Rd2! 26 Rf1 Rd4! ->
25. Qe2 Kh6
Black seems to be slightly better
Come on Kramnik….kick his a@@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Black is better, 25 Qe2 was not so good
The two pawns on white’s Queen side will make the difference in this game. Wait until Kramnik starts pushing them.
wow, kramnik is gonna lose the rook vs white bishop.
Is this a draw or black will win ?
“I really feel like Anand should hire me as his second, because it took me only 5 min to come up with Rg7 while he spent 20 min.”
Yes because he isn’t allowed access to a computer..
‘Yes because he isn’t allowed access to a computer..’
Oh, yeah? What about what he has the rest room? You’ve watched “The Enterprise” and their rest rooms full of invisible computers?
‘How can there be 2 novelties in the same game? When one has been played, then every move should be novel, right?’
Well, thats not entirely correct. You can figure out many movces that lead tomany novelties in one game only.
And where exactly does it say what a novelty is, point me to that book?
I think Rybka the engine is stupid. I think Rybka uses Crafty to become Rybka.
0-1
why anand not play
28 .. Bf3 ?
29. Qxf3 Rg1+
and get the white rook ?
Don’t trust live transmissions, my friend. The moves are keyed in by humans through handphoe connections, not machines. Trust only the official website.
Anand – incredible display or poise and calculation under extreme time duress. Incredible win!
Great game by Anand!!!
Anand has beaten Kramnik.
Marvelous game.
I liked their previous game better.
Strange that chessdom.com and the homepage of the match has different endings!
Susan, you are very beautiful.
All women are beautiful.

Who cares if the moves are wrong? Enjoy and have fun!
None of them knew theory today.
Novelty was lousy, already refuted in earlier analysis fof years ago.

Why did Kramnik resigned?
Can someone explain it to me?
I see that black can’t mate white yet,and white has potentialy dangerous pawn on a7 protected by rook. How black proceeds in this position?
“Why did Kramnik resigned?

Of course, we can. 🙂
After Bb1+ there are two moves: Ka1 is bad oviously, so white can try Kb3.
After 42. Kb3, Qc2+ 43. Kb4, Qxb2+ it is over as white must play 44. Rb3+ for not losing the rook but than Qd4+ picks up the pawn.
Finally a good game, the only one worth a WCC until now… I hope for more as Kramnik is in “zugzwang” now.
Thanks Jochen, but according to the loaded game viewer diagram on Susan’s blog ,the black queen is on square f1.Thus,he can’t play
42…Qc2+
?
Kb3 Qxf3+ followed By ..Qa8 and ..Bf3, game.
Very nice news to hear- Anand winning with black! I really want him to win this match!
Don’t make the mistake of Leko and play passively to keep your lead- instead still play for the initiative and bring it on to Kramnik to really have to play great to win.
“Kb3 Qxf3+ followed By ..Qa8 and ..Bf3, game.”

Sorry but I don’t understand this:”Bf3,game”.How black plays Bf3
when his bishop is on square b1?All right,he can play Bb3 ,but why game then??Write full reasoning.I don’t understand. Thanks!
Now ,I blew it too.
What I meant that he can play Bd3.
Hmmm, okay, that is what others said above about different endings.
I referred to the end position given by chessdom.com which has the queen on c1.
I am sorry if this was the wrong position and I confused someone..
I think Anand is playing exciting chess early……Kramniks usual tactics wont work here. He’s not playing Leko.
Kramnik resigned because, after plaing Kb3 (Ka1 Bc2+ Ka2 Qb1++) Anand plays Qxf3+ Kb4 Qa8 and then Be4, controling twice the a8 and b7 squares, then Anand plays his queen and puts his bishop on a8, and his queen is free to attack the white king and to grab the pawns on the kingside.
King Vishy
Kramnik is #1!
Kramnik is #1
Because I said so!
Because I said so!
Go Kramnik!
Pathetic FIDE is copying Susan’s analysis. See http://www.fide.com/component/

Thw worst being is it analysis done “while in the toilet between airports”. How else to explain some commentary inside it?
“Pathetic FIDE is copying Susan’s analysis… “while in the toilet between airports”. How else to explain some commentary inside it?”
Well it IS covering Kramniks pathetic losing performance. What better way to analyze camrade Vladimir Patzerinksi than while resting on the toilet. The Kramink commentary simply flows like an emptying bladder…
I even felt relief after reading the toilet commentary!
Yes!
Markus Roberti is back from the grave.
Too bad.
Ok, this is set of moves I am referring to!
In move 41, can’t Anand just finish everything by playing 41. … Bc2?
This would force the rook out from behind that pawn, allowing Anand to kill that pesky piece on a7!
Well, it doesn’t make much of a difference! He won anyway!
Clearly, from GK’s comments, it is a pity VK did not play 33.Kb3, in which case there would still be work for Black to do …
Thanks leroidavid!Now,I see why.
(You others who tried to explain just suck at chess even more than me)
Thanks for information susan..
