Cuban Chess Champion to Play in Wijk ann Zee

Havana, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuban chess Grandmaster Leinier Dominguez will play in the Corus Championships in the Dutch city of Wijk Aan Zee, the Granma daily reported on Friday.

The newspaper adds that Cuba´s current best player will see his dream come true by playing in the world´s second most competitive tournament, with only 14 players.

A 2719 ELO rated player, Dominguez ranks 21st among the best chess player in the world.

Elo, often written in capitals, is explained by Wikipedia as the family name of a Arpad Elo (1903–1992), a Hungarian-born US physics professor who created a method for calculating “the relative skill levels of players in two-player games.”

The tournament starts on Jan. 16, 2009 until February 1st.

The last Wijk ann Zee tournament was won by Norway´s Magnus Carlsen (2,786 ELO) and Armenian Levon Aronian (2,757), who won eight of the 11 rounds.

Before Wijk ann Zee, at the beginning of November, the Cuban will participate in the Speed Chess Tournament in Kazajstan and then move on to the Dresden Olympiad in Germany.
