Susan why the analysis ,why dont we just go unto the 10th game, dont spoil it with all the ifs and if not or what may have been or been not . for in chess:THERE ARE KNOWN KNOWNS:THERE ARE THINGS WE KNOW WE KNOW, WE ALSO KNOW THERE ARE KNOWN UNKNOWNS:THAT IS TO SAY WE KNOW THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE DO NOT KNOW.BUT THER ARE ALSO UNKNOWN UNKNOWNS-THE ONES WE DONT KNOW WE DONT KNOW.
The problem with Topalov is nothing to do with his nationality. The problem is that he kept that point! He has probably lost respect and support by doing so. If only he had refused to take it. Why did such a brilliant player keep it?? He has tarnished his reputation no matter what the result is. Such a pity.
Perhaps, if not down 0-2 in the WCC-match, he really could have refused to take it (I suppose there’s some way to do that in practise, even after Kramniks rightful forfeit by the arbiter!?).
I bet many of us (me included) would have done the same in Topalovs position. Just take the point and be happy to get chances in the match. Topalov is possibly the best chessplayer on earth, but in other respects hardly any more superhuman than you and me. After all, in my eyes Kramniks demonstration was tantamount to resigning otb. Even if he didn’t sign the scoresheet.
What if now -or after, say, drawing next game with black pieces -when things look sunny again, Topaz graciously says that: “Weeell, what about little things, let’s say it was a draw. OK?” Wouldn’t that be crazy, eh?
Seriously, I’m hardly the only one who’s some uneasy feelings about what will happen if Topalov wins the match. In the worst case, with that one point.
Even if Topalov wants to “give back the point of the 5th game”, or to “declare the 5th game a draw”, he can’t do so: only the FIDE’s Appeals Committee can preside and decide over this point.
Should Topalov declare that he “gives back this point” or that he “would like this game declared a draw”, the FIDE’s Appeals Committee would reject his decision.
I think that we will see three more victories for Topalov. Why three – that is going to be Topalov’s way to respect FIDE’s decision about Game5 and prove in an indisputable way that he is the champion. It is interesting to note that only my commentary before Game8 (NetoMeter): http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=13118012&postID=116002727325479478 was firm on the correct result of Game8.
Intuitively im am nearly 100% sure that under normal circumstances kramnik would not have lost Game 8 the way he did, believe it or not! He is counted on as the worldbest defender and now look at this. This is not normal for him and i think the psychological warefare of Topalov/Danailov has him affected more than he admits. In the next game the things have become even worser.
I would say that he is more stressed by the way Topalov plays. In the press conference audio: http://worldchess2006.com/download/wcc_pc_7_kramnik.mp3 he says that Topalov is playing like a machine gun. Try to imagine someone playing that way against you and beating you two games in a row.

Topalov’s only fault is that he is a Bulgarian.

What’s wrong with being Bulgarian? (apart that the game is in Russia)
Please, make yourself clear.

Topalov will give back the point and win in fine style…..watch…….he’ll even give the kreepy kamnik back a point. Watch…he wont need the point.

I think that Kramnik simply lost game 8 because he was going for simplifications too hard, but he was clealy not himself in game 9.
