On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Grant/ESAA (Elementary School for Arts and Acedemics) Schools chess team is hosting its annual chess tournament. The tournament will be held at the Econo Lodge, 821 Center Ave., from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The new owner of Sheboygan’s Econo Lodge, Alex Patel, is hosting the tournament for the children at rental charge. This venue introduces the children to a tournament that is just like the major tournaments in which adults participate.
Children can pre-register at www.wisconsinscholasticchess.org for $10. On-site registration costs $15. The Grant/ESAA chess team will be selling concessions. Six rounds will be played. The field is divided into three divisions: kindergarten through second grade (K2), K5, and K12. Trophies will be awarded to the top five individuals in each division and team trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.
Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation has sanctioned the tournament allowing the children to establish and improve their ratings within the WSCF system.
The seven other Sheboygan County scholastic chess teams will be represented. Players from the Fox River Valley are also expected to attend bringing participation to about 100 children.
The Grant/ESAA chess club has 40 members from the two schools total enrollment of about 400.
