Student chess club offers instruction

By NEWSDAY.COM

Chess instruction for students from the second grade on up is provided on the first three Wednesdays nights of the month at the Greenburgh Public Library, 300 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford.

Open play is also provided for those who already have a working knowledge of chess and individuals who want to practice their skills, a news release said Wednesday.

Test scores improved more than 17 percent for students regularly engaged in chess classes, compared with only about five percent for children participating in other forms of enriched activities, four-time World Champion Susan Polgar said in a recent interview.

The Chess Club meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library’s Local History Room and Teen Study Area. Registration is required and may be completed by sending an email to greenteen@greenburghlibrary.org or calling (914) 721-8224.
