Will we see a new women’s world champion? A rather rhetorical question? Without Yifan it’s simply a waste of time. What we will see is another second-rate world champion, not recognized within the chess scene, since the best female player is missing.
By the way, why did FIDE choose David Llada as the official photographer of the tournament? He is for sure the perfect person for some nice wedding portraits, but for this event? Alina l’Ami has proved with her outstanding photos from the 2016 FIDE Grand Prix in Tehran that she is simply the best. As a professional chess player with her exceptional artistic talent, she is unequaled. But maybe it’s better not to think too much about FIDE and their championships. As long as they are not interested to see the strongest players fighting for the crown in women’s chess, these people cannot be taken seriously.
