The 39th Chess Olympiad approached its equator. Only three teams managed to keep the pace and scored the maximum number of points – Armenia, Georgia, and Hungary. The Netherlands and Ukraine are one point behind, and 10 teams have 8 points.
The 5th round was unsuccessful for the first two Russian teams – both lost their matches with a minimal margin.
Russia-1, the main favorite of the competition, lost to Hungary. The Russians played without their leader, former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, and it didn’t work out: three games were drawn, and Alexander Grischuk lost to Peter Leko.
The defending champions from Armenia defeated Russia-2. Arman Pashikian won against Artyom Timofeev on the fourth board, and three other games ended peacefully.
The key match of the 5th round in the women competition was played between Russia-1 and China. The Russians prevailed with the score 2,5-1,5 – Nadezhda Kosintseva and Valentina Gunina won their games, while Alexandra Kosteniuk lost to Zhao Xue.
Russia-1 and Ukraine are leading after five rounds and will meet on Monday, September 27. USA and Hungary are one point behind; 12 teams collected 8 points.

Round 5, open: Russia-2 – Armenia – 1,5-2,5; Vietnam – Georgia – 0,5-3,5; Hungary – Russia – 2,5-1,5; Poland – Netherlands – 2-2; Bosnia and Herzegovina – Ukraine – 1-3; Azerbaijan – Sweden – 2,5-1,5.
Round 6, open: Georgia – Armenia, Ukraine – Hungary, Russia-2 – Netherlands, Russia-1 – Czech Republic, Azerbaijan – India, Vietnam – USA.
Round 5, women: Ukraine – Bulgaria – 3-1; China – Russia – 1,5-2,5; India – Iran – 3-1; Azerbaijan – Georgia – 0-4.
Round 6, women: Russia-1 – Ukraine, Georgia – USA, Hungary – Poland, Russia-3 – China, India – Italia, Bulgaria – Serbia, Armenia – Russia-2.
