Webster University’s chess team has won a record five consecutive national championships
WASHINGTON – Missouri U.S. Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt today honored the Webster University Chess Team on their record fifth consecutive national championship at the 2017 President’s Cup Collegiate Chess tournament in New York City.
“IBM may have Watson, but we have Webster University,” McCaskill said. “These students have certainly earned their Grand Master titles with their continued excellence, from opening move to final checkmate—and we’re so proud of their record accomplishments.”
“Webster University has proven once again that it is second to none in the game of chess,” said Blunt. “I’m so proud of what these students have been able to accomplish, and I’ll be cheering for them as they pursue their sixth consecutive championship title next year.”
The Senators today introduced a resolution commemorating Webster University’s historic achievement, noting their work promoting chess as a vehicle for enriching the education of children and young adults. Webster University has become a hub for developing chess excellence in students from the United States and around the world.
