Tuesday morning practical chess Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving White to move. What is the best continuation for White?3r1k2/6pp/n1p1Q3/pbqp4/1p3B1P/1P4P1/4PP2/4RBK1 w – – 0 1 Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I’m sleepy right now so my mind isn’t working properly, but is 1.Bd6 the right continuation? (Black must take!)
Rc1 forces either a trade of Q for R or forces the Queen to abonden the d6 square where the bishop can give check, which wins the exchange. thats the best I can come up with:)
Uhh, hmm, 1.Bd6 makes no sense, of course. I’ll come back when I’m awake!
Xanthum –
1.Rc1 Qa7
2.Bd6+ Rxd6
3.Qxd6+
… looks good, doesn’t it? Do you see anything conclusive after:
3…Qe7
…?
Another approach is:
1.Rc1 Qa7
2.e4
… trying to take advantage of various pins and overloads on Black’s rickety Q-side. I don’t see a forced win there, either.
1. Rc1!
If 1…Qe7 2 Qxe7 Kxe7 3 Bg5+
If 1…Qa7 2 Bd6+ Rxd6 3 Qxd6
seem to both be good for White.
1.Rc1 is the right answer.

Well, that settle it, then.
1.Rc1 is good, but 1.e4 looks better.
This threatens things like BxB followed by Bd6+, or ed followed by Re5
And if 1 … BxB
2 KxB
the threat of Rc1 is stronger than before now that c6 isn’t defended.

e2-e4 is indeed thematic, but isn’t it premature right off the bat? Let’s follow your line:
1.e4 Bxf1
2.Kxf1 dxe4
How do you want to recapture on e4? (Is there any alternative to recapturing?) Black can meet either 3.Rxe4 or 3.Qxe4 with 3…Qd5.
Kicking the queen first with:
1.Rc1 Qa7
… and only now hammering at the center with:
2.e4
seems to me like more accurate timing.
re the last anon:
1.e4 Bxf1
2.Kxf1 dxe4

i’ll take with the rook …
3.Rxe4 Qd5
then …
4.Bd6+
taking with the R allows Qe8++, so
4… Qxd6
5.Rf4+ Qxf4 (forced)
6.gxf4
and i got his Q for a R & B
then … Nc7 or b8
7.Qf5+ followed by picking off the a-pawn
if … Rd1+, then Kg2
no more checks, maybe take the b-pawn next
the king can protect his nearby pawns and the queen can pick off black’s pawns with double attacks and threats – should be easy from here
maybe an eventual exchange of the Q for the 2 black pieces, then promote one of the extra pawns white will have by then.

I overlooked this. You may be onto something with this 1.e4 business.
Rc1 seems great to me.
Rc1 seems great to me.
… qe7
Qxe7 Kxe7
Bg5 Ke8
Bxd8 Kxd8
balanced position – draw likely…
e4 wins as shown above
