Dozens of children and teens sat quietly in a room, patiently plotting their next move. Their goal was to sweep their opponent, sitting directly across the table.
Audrey Poudrier, a chess coach for Fairview Elementary, went around high-fiving her players before they began. She’s enjoyed teaching kids the game for the past 22 years, in part, because of the sport’s inclusiveness.
“It’s a mind game,” she said. “It’s a sport anybody can excel in.”
With Fairview closing its doors, this tournament is one of the few remaining chances Poudrier gets to fly under the Fairview flag, but she hopes not the last time she coaches kids on how to think ahead.
Great effort.
