THE Fiji Chess Federation (FCF) resumed its weekly clinics yesterday after a break of over three months.
A beginners clinic was held simultaneously with the Fiji womens training squad at the Tappoo City foyer yesterday.
FCF president Dr Virgilio de Asa said the first clinic of the year received good response and they are expecting it to get even better in the weeks to come.
“The response towards our clinic is very good and this is just the first one for the year so we are expecting it to get better as we go along,” de Asa said.
“Today (yesterday) we also had an Armenian family come and drop their eight year-old son, Gor Nahapetyan with us for the clinics after they read about it in Times Sport last week,” he said.
He said the clinics were conducted by Candidate Master (CM) Calvin Prasad, CM Manoj Kumar, Goru Arvind and FCF vice-president Gloria Sukhu.
“The top players of the country are taking the initiative to spread the sport to the young beginners present at clinics.”
“This is very good for the sports as out top players are helping teach those players who could become the top players of the country in the future.”
de Asa said the womens squad were being given special clinics as they are preparing for the Chess Olympiad that will be held in Istanbul, Turkey this August.
“They are being taught the basics again the basics are very important in the game of chess.”
“If we make mistakes with the basics, we can lose our games very easily so that is why we are stressing the importance of the basics to them.”
“Apart from that the womens team is preparing well and we have seen a lot of interest from these girls, they are keen and enthusiastic and this is a good sign for us,” he said.
Next Sunday, the FCF will host the Kundan Singh Open Championship at the Pasifika Campus.
