Beliavsky turns 55

Ukrainian GM Alexander Beliavsky celebrates his 55th birthday today. He belongs to the famous chess school from Lvov. From the mid 1970s he has been one of the leading chess players in the world.
Beliavsky had a meteoric rise to the chess elite, winning the World Junior Chess Championship in 1973 and the USSR Chess Championship in 1974. He also won the USSR championships of 1980 (with Psakhis), 1987 and 1990 (with Yudasin, Bareev and Vyzmanavin). Beliavsky qualified for the Candidates once, losing to eventual winner Garry Kasparov in the quarterfinals in 1983.
For the past few years Beliavsky has been living in Slovenia and representing that country in chess events. His best rating has been 2710(July 1997). His current rating of 2619 makes him No 1 player in Slovenia.
