OOPS! The only way to save the game is with an interposition! At least for a couple of moves.
1. Re8+ Rf8 2. R1e7 threating mate on h7 2. … Qxe7 the only defense 3. Rxe7 renewing the mating threat 3. … Rf7 interposing to buy 1 move 4. Rxf7 and now thier is no defense 5. Qxh7#
A mate in 5 problem is hardly easy. Although most of the moves are forced, the interposition by Black can be overlooked as the best defense. I did the first time through.
Susan,
Can these problems get any easier?
Variation 1 Variation 2

Mating Attack:
1. Re8+ Rxe8 forced because this is the only piece that can prevent checkmate, the interpositions are less effective.
2. Rxe8+ Rf8 the only choice
3. Rxf8+ Qxf8 the last of the defenders
4. Qxf8#
