Hot on the heels of the 2007 Canadian Youth Championship, the 2007 Canadian Open Chess Championship began Saturday, with more than 20 GMs as the stars of a field of 278 players.
Top-rated GMs Bu Xiangzhi, Nigel Short, Vadim Milov, Kamil Miton and Sergey Tiviakov all won. But several Canadian players playing up 200 points or more nicked some GMs for half- and even full-points.
The event, a 10-Round, one-section event running until July 15, is being held at the Ottawa Marriott in Canada’s capital. Spirits are high at the event, which is sponsored principally by Hill and Knowlton Canada, the country’s industry leader in public relations, public affairs and strategic communications, and Magmic Games, a leading publisher and developer of games for mobile devices.
Results, game downloads and even three top-board games annotated by IM Deen Hergott are available at the event’s quick-and-dirty blog: http://canchess.blogspot.com

This is fantastic. I’m happy for our friends up north.
