Maybe after 1 Bxe7 Rxe7 2 Nxg6 Rc7 is the sturdiest move with the idea 3 Nxf8 Nd2 and the knight cannot escape. Then 4 Rxf7 Rxf7 5 Rxf7 Kxf7 6 Nd7 Nc4 is not entirely clear.
3. Nxf8 Nd2 and then 4. Re3! with the idea of 5. Re8 looks like a crush to me, wortwart… 4. … Nxf1 5. Re8! and black can resign; white is threatening Ne6+ winning the rook if black saves his knight.
I was struggling with this after it was posted, and decided Bxe7, Nxg6 is what was being sought.
White wins the exchange easily, and black can’t defend h5, so he gets an outside passed pawn and that should be enough, but can’t help feeling I’m missing something.
1. Bxe7 Rxe7 2. Nxg6 looks pretty bad for black…
Bh6 hangs the rook at h8
Bh6? Nd2 and white isn’t actually winning material.
Bxe7 Rxe7 Nxg6 actually wins material because now Nd2? loses a whole piece after Nxe7+

1) Bxe7 Nd2
2) Bc5
and white wins a piece
