As Black, with my queen covering my rook, I immediately want to try 1. … Nf6, with a discovered attack on White’s queen while also threatening mate on h2. White’s best is probably 2. Qxd8+ Qxd8 3. gxf3.
It took me awhile to see that black’s knight is not pinned since the black Q is protecting d8. This means that 1. … Nf3! is a winning double attack. 2. Qxf3 allows Qe1# and 2. h3 allows Rxd1#, and of course if 2. Qxd8, Qxd8.
My first and immediate thought when I saw the position was to play Nf3, but as everybody is saying this is the right move, the answer must be something else.
1. …Nf3 2.Qxd8+ Qxd8 3.gxf3
Is white really that bad in this position? Considering the passed c-pawn…. It’s not an easy win for black!
To me it looks like 1. …Ne4 is the best move! Here it seems white will loose badly. I can’t find white a proper defense for it.

So white either loses his Q or is mated. -+
Nf3+ should do the trick, threatening mate and attacking the white queen simultaneously. Black wins.

1. … Nf3!
Kf3 wins the queen.
If Qxf3, Qe1#
Is it really as easy as …Nf3? Am I missing something?
1. …Nf3
if QxN, then Qe1#
if gxN then RxQ+
if QxR then QxQ
and finally, if white tries to defend against the mate by
2. Qg1, then Qxh2
3. QxQ Rd1#
Ng3 and over.
Dual threat of mate of h2 and the queen under attack. If queen takes rook, then black loses the queen and then checks on 1st rank to pick up the rook
1. Nf3 looks good to me!
Nf3,Qxd8+,Qxd8,gxf3,Qd1+,Kg2,Qxc2+,Kg1
🙂
there are a couple of decent ways to do this one, I like Nf3 as well though.
