According to one of the bloggers on this blog, Ray is leading the 2009 Panamerican Junior in Uruguay by 2 points. He is 7/7 so far. All he needs is 1/2 point in his final 2 games to win the event and a GM norm (which would be his final norm). Another blogger just provided us the link.
Thank you for the great news! Go Ray! We are all rooting for you!

Go Ray! Bring that GM norm home!
Michigan Chess Dad
That’s fantastic news if true, but how could he get a GM norm when there’s only one grandmaster in the event?
How can that be possible? You need 3 GMs in the field to get a GM norm. There is only one GM participant.
It is an automatic GM norm to the winner, regardless of who the winner plays.
Another one of those imports.
I wonder how many GM’s came ‘from’ USA, not ‘into’ USA.
The ruling (6.2) says that the winner has IM title and a GM norm.
6. TÍTULOS Y PREMIOS
Ray can get the GM norm in a much more stronger group.
But, a GM title is a GM title.
And of course Ray is more than deserving to be a GM regardless.
1) Play at least three GMs and five titleholders, no more
than two players may be without a FIDE-ELO rating (including yourself)
2) Play against players from at least three federations, and no more than
six from the same federation (including yourself)
3) Score at least 7/9 against an ELO-average of at least 2381, 6.5/9 against
at least 2435 or 6/9 against at least 2476. Eventually, opponents without FIDE-ELO
are counted as 2250 (previously 2000).
Hi is Ray Robson “an import”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Robson,
Just because he was born in Guam does not make him an import. John Mccain was born in Panama and he was running for President.
So is President Obama an import too?
We must let the INS decide who is an import and who is an American. It is not our job to decide that.
We simply play chess.
