Bravo to the editorial board for putting a spotlight on chess and Chicago’s future role in world competition (Editorial, May 28). Around the world, chess players are recognized as celebrities, much as we recognize our own athletes or movie stars. Russian grandmasters are stopped in the street by fans. Chess is an international, respected game, and Chicago could take the lead in showing the world our beautiful and dynamic city.
My son has played tournament chess since kindergarten and just graduated from high school. Chess has taught him intellectual and life skills, with valuable lessons about perseverence and integrity. He has worked hard to attain the title of National Master.
Chicago’s children can learn so much from chess. It’s time to step up, Chicago. We can all give new meaning to “And you can put it on the board, YES.”
