Kumar retains Fiji Chess title

Defending Fiji chess champion Manoj Kumar staged a remarkable feat to retain the 18th Kundan Singh Open Chess title at the Fiji Olympic House in Suva yesterday.
Kumar, the 2008 National Male Athlete of the Year at the Fiji Sports Council Awards night proved dominant in the major category.
He chalked four out of the five possible points to edge runner up Neel Arora while Calvin Prasad claimed third standing with three and half points.
For the first time in history the Fiji Chess Federation has recorded a large number of registered entries and has also staged the event in two categories (major and minor).
In the minor category, woman prospect Gloria Sukhu took out the gold with an undefeated performance. Sukhu who bagged five straight wins has shown vast improvement in her outing while the national junior development squad kicked of the year with a promising outing.
