King and Pawn endgame K and P endgame, Puzzle Solving 8/8/p7/6p1/4K1P1/4P1Pk/8/8 w – – 0 1 White to move. Is this a win for White, Black or draw? Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
white wins
1.kd4 a5
2.e4 a4
3.e5 a3
4.kc3
and white can stop the pawn and promote his own.
Kd4 is not the winning move as the first an says.
Kd4 will be met by kxg4.
Kd4 does win!
1 .. Kxg4
2 e4 a5
3 e5 a4
4 e6 a3
5 Kc3 +-
if 3 .. Kf5
4 Kd5 a4
5 e6 a3
6 e7 a2
7 e8(Q) a1(Q)
8 Qe6#
in this last line, if
5 .. Kf6
6 Kd6 a3
7 e7 a2
8 d8(Q) a1(Q)
9 Qh8+ skewering the black Queen
and in this very last line, if
7 … Kf7
8 Kd7 a2
9 e8(Q)+ K any
10 Qa8 and collects the point
1.Kd4 Kxg4! 2.e4 Kh5! (our theme is chessboard geometry)
so 1.Kd5, perhaps? Now 1…Kxg5 2.e4 looks winning. 2…Kh5 3.Kc5! (after Réti) 3..a5 4.e5!
But 1.Kd5 a5!
I am confused and it is bedtime
🙂
I go with bill’
kd5 is the wining move.
not kd4?
1.Kd4 Kxg3 2.e4 wins for White
1.Kd4 Kxg4 is a 6-man draw
1.Kd5 Kxg3 e4 wins for White
1.Kd5 Kxg4 e4 wins slower for Wh.
1. kd4 doesn’t work because of the idea with kh5
1. kd5! a5 2 e4 a4 3 kc4 kg4 4. kb4 kh5 5. kxa4 kg6 6. kb3 kf6 7. ke2 ke5 8. kd3 +-
1 … kxg4 2. e4 (a5 3. kc5! +-) kh5 3 e5 kg6 4. kd6 a5 5. e6
the difference is that white has kd6 if needed and after 1. kd4 there is no such option
