Johnson sets record in chess qualifier

HISTORY is definitely in the making for Trinidad and Tobago Chess. Joshua Johnson of Maria Regina Grade School, having won the PKF Sponsored U-12 National Championship earlier this year, has now captured the PKF Sponsored U-20 Absolute Open Junior Chess Championship.

He won the last round of the tournament against the older and more experienced Essan Wiltshire who has returned to national chess after being out of action this year.

Johnson was crowned overall winner as the championship has both boys and girls playing together.

The last junior to win both the National Open U-20 Championship and a National Junior Age group Category Championship was Keron Cabralis, who recently acquired a FIDE Master title at the Sub-Zonal in Bahamas. Johnson has been showing great promise over the past two years charting a course that seems comparable to that of Cabralis who at the age of 14, is now considered one of Trinidad and Tobago’s top chess players.
