I’ve been a long time reader of your blog and thought I’d share with you a little conversation I had with my 5 year-old daughter while driving to her first school chess club meeting:
Isabelle: Daddy, will my teacher be there?
Me: I’m not sure, sweetie. I don’t know if Mrs. Thompson plays chess.
I: Because lots of girls don’t play chess?
M: Oh no! Lots of girls play chess! In fact, Daddy learns how toplay chess by reading a book that a girl wrote!
I: What’s her name?
M: Susan Polgar.
At this point, in the rear view mirror I saw her squeeze her armstogether in excitement and glee as she squealed:
That means I can be a chess champion!
🙂 🙂 🙂
I almost cried right there I was so happy. By the way, though she was the youngest kid there by far, she had a great time since a very kind3rd grader invited her to play. They both had a blast. The whole wayhome she was just giddy with delight and so excited for the next meeting.
THANK YOU Frank for sharing this story with all of us! This certainly made my day!
Very cool.
I remember a similar conversation with my daughter. After explaining to her that she could do anything she wanted….doctor..lawyer..Prime minister…(She was 5) …she shrugged her shoulders and said…(No kidding) …”Well.,..I really like being a little kid.. Do people ever want to grow down?”
Thank god I heard the wisdom of her words…..as you did with your daughter.I quit my government job within about 2 months (everyone thought I was nuts) and went into animation. Kids are so awesome if you just listen to em. I’ll be keepin an eye out for your daughter..beautiful story. Thanks…You reminded me of mine…All the best.

Just for future reference, can I ask her name so I can say I knew her when…
