New programs and technology funded through a Gifted & Talented Parents Association grant should provide Midland Independent School District students with some unique opportunities, association members said.
More than $7,450 will go to fund programs and equipment at Midland High School, Lee High School and the Carver Center. G/T teachers from each school filed applications for specific programs and equipment.
…Research suggests students experience a significant increase in pattern recognition, divergent and critical thinking and logical reasoning by playing the game of chess. In particular, a test conducted through the Texas Learning Index in 1997 showed students who played chess improved in reading and mathematics at a rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent faster than students who did not play chess.
District Project THINK/QUEST students will have the opportunity to find out if that research is correct. GTPA grant money was used to purchase 23 chess sets and 23 teacher demonstration boards for 23 elementary campuses.
The chess proposal came by way of Project THINK/QUEST teacher Martha Petrek.
