European Individual Women’s Chess Championship 2013 opened in Belgrade
BELGRADE – Serbian Minister of Sport and Youth Alisa Maric and President of the European Chess Union (ECU) Silvio Danailov made symbolic first moves at the opening of the 2013 European Individual Women’s Chess Championship (EIWCC) in Belgrade’s hotel Metropol on Tuesday, Tanjug reported.
The 14th edition of the championship, taking place from July 22 to August 4, will host a record number of 169 chess players from a total of 35 countries.
As a grandmaster and someone who until recently actively played at such competitions, I am very proud about the fact that the championship is being held in Belgrade, Maric said. Serbia has a long chess history and I am confident that this event will help promote the game even more, she added.
The event was organized by the Serbia Chess Federation and the Belgrade Center for Development of Chess, under the auspices of the ECU.
