“Simple” mate in 4 (if black sac’s his rook on h5 to lengthen his pain). In the second move you shouldn’t use the wrong figure to check on the h-line….
I thought about it quite some time, and I think the best continuation is. 1Nf6+ Kf8 2. Nd7+ Kg8 3.Nxe5 and white is winning because of the threat Rb8+ and Qxf7+. Am I right or did I miss something better?
1. Nf6+ Kf8 (1. … Kh8 loses to 2. Rh3 Bh6 2. Qxh6+ etc…) 2. Nd7+ Kg8 (2. … Qxd7 Rb8+ Qc8 (Qd8 and Qe8) 3. RxQ#) or 2. … Rxd7 3. Rf3+ Rf7 4. Rb8 wins) 3. Nxe5 and soon Black will fall to Rb8.
This is correct, but there is no immediate mate if black closes the b file with Nb4. Then probably Rd2 or Re2 would be best, with mate eventually coming a few moves later. Susan’s question was if there is a mating attack. It seems the most accurate answer is black can delay that…
Argh, Kerry, you’re right- I “found” Qe8, too. Damn. Then it is not a simple mate in 4. I’m sorry.
Having looked again I found 2 Nd7+, too. If black not takes it but plays Kg8 3.Nxe5 seems to win. Whites threats 4. Nxf7 Qxf7 5.Rb8+ or even more simple directly 4. Rb8+ forces black to play Nb4 (what else?) but then white’s rook enters via d-line. 4. Rd2 and over.
I still can’t believe having overseen Rxe8, thanks for correcting.
After Kf8: 2. Qe8+? Rxe8 as said above. Did you read the comments before posting your own one? After Kh8: 2. Rh3+ Bh6 3. Rxh6 Kg7 seems better then Rh7? In your last variation Qf8 is not possible (Rh7, Kh1).
i see a few mates but if black plays correct defense he might be able to escape with only losing some material. jochen you arrogent german piece of shit dont comment on my solutions. just play ball tag with your buddy vohaul.
or some sort of suspension system for posts that have to be moderated? The whole world sees when someone on here calls someone else names or retaliates or whatever. Susan is trying to promote chess not make it look bad. what is so hard about being civil?
The reason I knew to point out Rxe8 is because I made the same mistake, but (luckily) corrected it before posting a second incorrect “solution”. As so many of us have fallen for it, there must be weird optical (visualization) illusion because it is painfully obvious if given a moment’s thought. I suppose in our mind’s eye the queen is blocking the rook’s access to e8?
you’re right – that’s a very interesting psychological blockade. Such things can (but shouldn’t!) easily happen in long calculations – who did never play a calculated variation, suddenly seeing that he or she had overseen something very simple (like an own pawn standing in a way or even saccing a figurine and although wanting to use it later on)? We call that “Schachblindheit” – I don’t know the english word.
Good if it happens here but on the board!
Best wishes Jochen
Wolverine, why do you get insulting? “German piece of shit”?
I do not know what kind of shit you are – and I do not want to know because it doesn’t matter to me where you are from. Do you blame me because I am german (the only connection to Vohaul I see)? Do you blame me for correcting your post trying to help you?
I don’t know what I have done to you…. people starting insulting without reasons are not worth talking to. So next time I will just laugh about your insults but though I ask you to try to keep it clean, please.

2.Nd7+ Kg8 (2. … Qxd7 2. Rb8+, 2. … Rxd7 3. Rf3+ Rf7 4. Rb8+)

Sorry, there was a mistake in the previous solution. Had skipped a move.
1. Nf6+ leads to mate.
A. If 1 .., Kf8 then 2. Qe8++mate.
B. If 1 .., , Kh8, then
2. Qh3+, Bh6
3. Qxh6+, Rh7
4. Rg8++ mate.

Oops,
If I wrote:
1. Qh6 RxN
2. Rxg7 Rxg7
that just loses. So much for trying to be first.
The correct solution:
1. Nf6+ Kh8
2. Qh3 leads to mate
1. Nf6+ Kf8
2. Nd7+
then..
2. …QxN
3. Rb8+ with mate to follow
2. …RxN
3. Rf3+ Rf7
4. Rb8+ Qxb8
5. Qxf7#
2. …RxN
3. Rf3+ Bf6
4. Rxf6+ Kg7

6. Qg8#
2. …RxN
3. Rf3+ Bf6
4. Rxf6+ Kg7
5. Rg6+ Kf8
6. Rg8#
Slower, but much better.
Did I miss any defenses this time? I also now realize that with moderation, I probably was not near first anyway….doh!
By the way, everyone who has:
1. Nf6+ Kf8
2. Qe8??
2. …Rxe8 and black wins easily.

After Nxe5, Rb8 forces Nb4. If Qxb8 Qxf7+ Kh8 Qxg7++; if Rb8 Kh7 Qg6++.
Nxe5 Nb4. Then,
1. Rd2! Threats are Rd8+ or Nxf7.
Black simply CAN’T PREVENT MATE by one of these routes. Bishop and Rook are pinned. Knights are remote. Only options are Queen and King moves.
Knight moves
1. Rd2 Nxc4
2. Rd8+ Kh7
3. Qg6++
1. Rd2 Nd5
2. Rxd5 mating
King moves
1. Rd2 Kf8 (also 2. Rd8+)
2. Nxf7 Qxf7
3. Rd8++
1. Rd2 Kh8
2. Nxf7+ Kh7 (2. ..Rg8 3. Ne5+ mates)
3. Rh3+ Bh6 (not 2…Rg8)
4. Rxh6+ Kg7
5. Rg6+ Kf8
6. Rd8+ Qxd8

2. Rh3+ Kg8

6. Qg6++
(2..Bh6 3. Rxh6 Kg7 4. Rg6+ Kh8 5. Nxf7+ Kh7 6. Ng5+ Kh8 7. Qf8++)
Queen moves

2. Re8+ Qxe8 (2..Kh7 3. Qg6++)
3. Qxf7+ Kh8
4. Qxg7++
1. Rd2 Qxd5
2. Rd8+ Kh7
3. Qh3+ mating

2. Rd8+ Kh7
