Gausdal Bygger’n Masters 2006 will be played at the well known Gausdal high mountain hotel in Norway 24 September to 2 October. 9 rounds Swiss, time limits 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves in one hour and then 1/2 hour for the rest of the game. Open for all players with a FIDE-ELO at least 2000, and a limited number of players below 2000 or without a FIDE-ELO. Chances for GM-norms and excellent chances for IM-, WGM- and WIM-norms. The Masters is a 9 round Swiss with one rest day with £56,500 prize money, including prizes specifically for women mounting to £9000.
There are two Challengers tournaments for players under 2200 or unrated each of 5 rounds. The total prize fund for these two events is £9000. A player taking part in both the Masters and Challengers could win £6000.
There are two Amateur tournaments for player rated under 1800 or unrated each of 5 rounds each with a prize fund of £2250.

Also, going on right now in Ecuador is the Pan American Youth Festival where several of the top young U.S. players are playing chess with their South American and Central American counterparts.
Looking at the Gausdal tournament as an example, it seems like in Europe you can attract a good number of titled players (10 GMs last year) with a relatively modest prize fund (EUR2601 or ~$3500US). Since the non-titled players are paying entry fees, a lot if not all of the prize fund is covered. So, an event can be held for the cost of the accomodations. Untitled masters and strong amateurs get to play GMs and IMs and take a shot at norms. It’s a win for everyone and you don’t end up with a class player walking away with a bigger sectional money than multiples GMs who may have to split top prizes.
Why can’t we host more of such events in the U.S? It would go a lot ways towards developing our young players and untitled masters…
