FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) — At a place in Flint, Michigan that’s known for creating champions, there’s a game underway.
If you want in, you need to learn to think steps ahead of each move.
The players will improve with each win and loss, but most importantly, they’ll learn a strategy to survive that could change their lives.
Berston Fieldhouse is part of a growing effort to teaching children the skills required for conquering a game of chess.
In a city struggling to overcome the water crisis, crime and poverty, chess is a reminder that sometimes you have to move backwards to take better steps forward.
If you are interested in playing, the final summer workshop starts at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 23 in the Berston gym.
The hope is that the club will continue this fall, so if you can coach, mentor or make a donation please call the Berston Fieldhouse at (810) 787-6531.
