Catalina Foothills High School won first place in the national chess championship held over the weekend, said parents of some of the participants.
Seventeen students from Catalina Foothills High traveled to Kansas City to play in the championship section but only the top four scores from each team count for determining the national championship. The top four finishers for the team are: Vaishnav Aradhyula, Landon Brownell, Christopher De Sa, and Pavel Savine, according to a news released prepared Sunday by Satheesh Aradhyula, a team dad.
More than 1,400 students from across the country played in the three-day tournament organized by the United States Chess Federation.
First place was awarded to Catalina Foothills based on a tie-break formula that takes into account cumulative performance. Foothills has won two of the last three National High School Championships. The school finished second in 2006.

Congratulations to CFHS!!
I know the members of this team and they have worked very hard all year long with one goal in mind. It was more than just chess practice, they ran 3 chess tournaments to raise funds to be able to afford this trip. Their hard work has paid off!!
