Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
If the tournament is a week longer, Topalov would have won. He just warmed up too late.
Carlsen deserved this, he played well throught the event. Topalov had some luck in the last game, but it was cool that he played the Grunfeld and went for the win.
Great play by Carlsen. Solid show by W C Anand, apart from his 4th round hiccup. 32.Rc3?? by Topalov!. Aw! c’mon! That’s vintage Topalov – just one of Topa’s tricks to deny Anand any chances whatsoever. It’s obvious.
Not as dominant as last year for Carlsen. Has he already peaked? Did he need Kasparov’s mentoring to sustain a high level?
If TOpalov lost that last game…and he was lost…let’s face it…and lucky to get the point. Carlsen has settled down now….and is playing back to his level…he even let go of two winning positions…but to be fair..was under pressure in two with Black. Anand played steadily…and deserved 2nd place. Bacrot got a great tourney and did well …Gashimov and Wang were where they should have ended up. The only surprise is Topalovs play….It’s concerning as he’s dropped I think over 30 points now…and doesn’t seem to be very sharp. His loss against Carlsen with white for example is a good example. Anyhows…congrats to all…I think Carlsen needed this tourney to steady himself after Bilbao and the Olympics. And special Mention to Bacrot..who overperformed.
Anand himself missed the obvious against Topalov, so no point in the previous post. Carlsen won convincingly.
And if Anand Won that particular game with Topalov he would have ended up in….wait for it….2nd place!! lol…
Somebody is a Topalov lover.
