Below is the official statement from Fabiano Caruana regarding the 2013 US Championship:
There now appear to be some FIDE Zonal issues regarding my participation.
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Zonal President Francisco Guadalupe of the USCF stating that they “need to check with FIDE” and that they “hope to have an answer within a couple of days.”
Whatever the outcome, I do wish the USCF and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis the very best for their upcoming 2013 US Championship.”

Someone in the USCF screwed this up badly.
Nice to see how the USCF treat an American born player. It’s time to abolish this incompetent organization.
This is only a problem because there is an interesting intersection of dual citizenship and dual sanctioning of a tournament (same tournament being USCF’s US Championship and FIDE’s Zonal).
Hopefully, sane heads will prevail and the two organizations can come to an accommodation for this talented young man.
I fear, though, that politics will again interfere with these two bodies doing what is right for both chess and the players they claim to represent.
From a purely practical view, how is it that a US citizen (who also happens to be the best player in the US) might not be eligible to play for the US championship?
The USCF doesn’t do what’s right for the players or chess. Every politician is making decisions to benefit their friends and buddies. All of us in Texas hope that Mr. Guadalupe won’t fall into the same pitfall. Stand up for players and not the politicians.
According to the story, FIDE might block Caruana’s participation for correct and principled World Championship cycle reasons (read the story – understand the story).
However Caruana is becoming an automatic for the World Championship cycle, therefore FIDE should not block Caruana’s participation.
Guadalupe is responsible and capable, so I have confidence in him.
Many people trust Guadalupe but they don’t trust the corrupt USCF. They don’t do anything good for chess. They want power so they can benefit from it personally.
Not so sure this would be in Nakamura’s best interest lol
