Ivanchuk!
Kramnik
Kramnik
Ivanchuk
Anand was very lucky in the WCC in his first round against Gelfand and didn’t do well in the European Teams & German Bundesliga since winning the title.
Kramnik was close behind Anand in the WCC and has managed to turn the Catalan into a terrible weapon; he achieved an outstanding win in the Tal Memorial.
Therefore the best player this year IMO is Kramnik.
The “Newcomer” of the year is definitely Carlsen.
People have a short memory, why forget Linares. Anand won it. Ofcourse WCC most important event of this year. he became number one. Look also at his rapid results especially at mainz.
Its Anand’s year by a big margin.
Rybka?
Best Results: Anand, Kramnik
Most improved: Kamsky, Shirov, Carlsen, Karjakin
It is too early to put Carlsen on the list of who has played the best chess above Gelfand and Topalov who both have done better than him this year.
My guess is it’s pretty close between Kramnik and Anand when it comes to rating performance. Because Anand won the world championship I guess I have to say he played the best chess this year though, but in a sense, I do feel Kramnik is a stronger player, and that he will win the world championship match against Anand.
It is quite true..
Topalov did not have the best year, BUT he clearly had better results than most of the people mentioned in the poll!!
Why is his name missing?
He won: Wik Aan Zee (in tie), Sofia and the tournament in Spain by a big margin. He played badly only at Linares/Morelia.
I personally believe Kramnik was best this year with Anand close second (or the opposite).
But third was clearly Topalov…
Kamsky for example, was behind Topalov in all tournaments. Before the world cup he was losing rating points and his starting rating was not that high.
Topalov as ever
Kramnik has played the best overall, Anand had the biggest high.
As usual with a question like this, half the people ignore the question and just name their favorite player. (Ivanchuk? Topalov??) What’s the point of even asking?
1.Anand
2.Kramnik
3.Magnus has climbed from an unofficial half year low of 2676 after Corus up to 2733 on the Jan08 list!
second at Linares
first place at Biel
3-3 (2-2 rapid) Against Aronian
8/12 world cup
4.Topalov
5.Kamsky/Shirov
6.Karjakin
7.Ivantchuk
8.Gelfand
9.Jakovenko
10.Starwars
When it comes to most impressive play in 2007, I have to go for KRAMNIK. Sometimes it was unbelieveable what skill he displayed in the way he managed to put the kind of position on the board which he could then turn into a win.
I also think he was the best player in 2007. My suspicion is that Kramnik did not want to win Mexico City because he did not want to give Topalov another shot at the Title. He only lost 1 game in standard (against Morozevich) in 2007. (Anand lost to Kramnik, Topalov, Aronian)
For achievement, Anand is the best 2007. He won the Title and some tournaments.
For progress, Carlsen is the best. Not only rating wise, but also from playing strength.
Carlsen is also easily the most interesting to follow. His match against Aronian, his matches at the WC… maybe not the best chess (compared to Kramnik, Anand, etc.) but always with drama and fight.

Rybka
Zappa
All others are losers.

A tie for Kramnik – the world’s best! – and for Carlsen!
Still… do nor forget amazing Karjakin… he is there for a future win!!! 🙂
People have short memories indeed. How can you vote for a guy who missed a mate-in-one??
Also Kramnik has only done well in tournaments that don’t really matter. In ones that do, he has done badly. Anand won the ones that mattered. So Anand.
Its obviously Anand. He won Linares, and then WCC. Kudos to him. Hope to see him win the Oscar for 2007, which will be his 5th.
