Anand wins Masters meet in Spain

Viswanathan Anand got a shot in the arm before the Grand Chess Tour by winning the Masters Tournament in Leon, Spain, for a record ninth time on Sunday night.
The Indian No. 1 who won the tournament previously in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011 got the better of Chinese Grandmaster Wei Yi in the final.
Four players including Anand and Wei took part in the 29th edition of the tournament. Local participants GM David Anton and International Master Jaime Santos Latasa completed the roster. Anand got past Anton 2.5-1.5 in the semifinal to set up a summit clash with previous winner Wei.
The India No.1 player won the first match of the final and then drew the next three games to claim the title 2.5-1.5. “I always feel at home here,” said Anand at the closing ceremony. He will next travel to Leuven, Belgium for the second leg of Grand Chess Tour which will be played in rapid and blitz formats from June 17-20. Anand will replace French GM Laurent Fressinet in this leg of the Tour.
