Young chess players are showcasing their skills at the national junior championships in Hobart.
During the next fortnight, more than 100 competitors will play about 2,000 games of chess.
Fifteen-year-old international master James Morris has high hopes of being named Australian Junior Chess Champion in his age group.
“But obviously a lot easier said than done,” he said.
Organiser Russell Horton says it is an impressive field and some players may one day reach the revered status of Grand Master.
“Grand Master means the ‘big poohbah’ of chess, it means you’re pretty good.”
The tournament includes regular and five-minute lightning games, along with a problem solving competition.
