Some held their tongues between their teeth; others had theirs planted in their cheeks — whatever it took to concentrate.
Saturday and Sunday at Minneapolis Washburn High School, 469 children in kindergarten through sixth grade participated in the Minnesota State Elementary and Primary Chess Tournament.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
This was a very successful tournament.
the photo seems to have the same mistake shops do when advertising their chess sets 😛
The runner up in the k-3rd grade section was a 1st grader. The champion was a smallish 3rd grader. It was funny watching them trying to hold up trophies that were almost taller than they were.
The whole tournament was overshadowed by the death of Larry Lampert, founder and president of the School Chess Association since 1968. He died of a heart attack 3 weeks ago. This would have been his 40th state tournament.
In the photo one set of royalty (presumably white) has been set up on the wrong squares.
