It will be a busy holiday season for local chess enthusiasts, with a trio of strong events on tap in the coming weeks.
There’s still time to get over to Fort Myer’s recreation center for the Arlington Chess Club championship, being held today and tomorrow.
The ACC is the largest and strongest club in the area, and those who have played in any of the military service championships know the Fort Myer site may be one of the best undiscovered venues for chess in the region.
The 34th annual Eastern Open then kicks off two days after Christmas at its traditional site at the Westin Washington City Center Hotel at 1400 M St. NW. Along with the summertime Atlantic Open, the Eastern is one of the two big draws on the local chess calendar, an eight-round, four-day Swiss event that routinely attracts a clutch of top grandmasters.
There is a big side-blitz event, and chess books and paraphernalia are on sale as well. Call the U.S. Chess Center at 202/857-4922 for more information and playing schedules.
The weekend of Jan. 25 through 27 will see the 40th running of the Virginia Open, also at its familiar home at the Holiday Inn-Express in Springfield. Check it out at http://vachess.org/vaopen.htm.

I’ll be playing in one of them for sure. Thanks for letting us know.
