The Cub Scouts in West Haven love doing a variety of year-round adventures that engage kids in fun and value-based activities. This week, Pack 288 met up with Jim Celone, West Haven High School’s former chess coach and current president of the CT State Chess Association, to play chess—on the beach!
Mr. Celone is no stranger to teaching chess. His teams have won both state and national championships. He is currently heading the West Haven Renegade Knights Chess Club, which meets weekly and is open to all ages and skill levels. Over the summer, Celone’s group meets on the boardwalk near the bocce courts for some open-air chess playing and coaching.
“This is a great partnership for our young Scouts,” said Ryan DeJonghe, a leader for one of Pack 288’s Webelos Dens. “Mr. Celone is a former Eagle Scout and helped write the Chess Merit Badge booklet. Scouting is all about exposing kids to an assortment of options: hiking, biking, camping, swimming, rope climbing, and even chess. It’s all about building a set of wholesome life skills from an impressionable age.”
