Endgame tactic Chess tactic, Endgame Improvement, Puzzle Solving Black to move. How should black proceed?Source: ChessToday.net Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
1 … h2
2 Rh7 R:a4
1 … h2
2. Rh7 Ra1, winning because of the skewer.
White rook taking the pawn at h2 is taboo since Ra2+ will win the White Rook! Hence:
1. … Ra1! wins easily
2. Rh7 h2!!
3. Rxh2 Ra2+ 0-1
Or, even this should work:
1. … h2!
2. Rh7 Ra1!!
3. Rxh2 Ra2+ 0-1
1… h2
2.Rh7 Ra1
and wins for White runs into skewer after 3.Rxh2 Ra2+
h2 Rh7
Ra1! Rxh2
Ra2+ and black wins the rook
1. …h2
2.Rh7 Ra1
1. … h2
2. Rh7 Ra1
3. Rxh2 Ra2+ and
4. … Rxh2
1…h2 2.Rh7 Ra1
That white king is on the wrong rank. Black can push the h-pawn with impunity:
1. …..h2
2. Rh7 Ra1!
3. Rh2 Ra2 wins white’s rook.
However, black can transpose moves here, I think, and play 1. …Ra1 first.
