Nakamura lost to Svidler too. In fact, Naka didn’t win a single blitz game in the playoff!
Naka is a very strong ONLINE blitz player, but OVER THE BOARD blitz isn’t exactly the same thing.
Nakamura knows that, and this is probably the reason why he’s never participated in the World Blitz Championships: He would probably not live up to the blitz reputation that he has on ICC.
Naka’s strongest point on icc is his speed. At world blitz championship it is 3 2 which means you start with three minutes and get 2 second each move, so time is not as important as 3 0 games on icc, strong play is more important.
Carlsen played much better positional chess than Nakamura in this video from my perspective. It was clear to me that if Carlsen played coolly, he’d pass the pawns on the queenside before Naka could finish his attack. On the other hand, from the standpoint of creativity, Naka’s style was much more interesting than Carlsen’s.
How can Nakamura lose? I thought he’s the best blitz player?
I’m surprised that Naka resigned.

This was a really cool video, very instructive.

I think 13.Qf4 was required, with 13.- Qc7 14.Qf6 Rg8 15.Nxh7 to follow.
