Here are some interesting tidbits about the 2009 World Championship:
Magnus defeated the 2nd (Anand), 3rd (Karjakin), 4th (Kramnik), and 5th place (Grischuk) finishers by a total score of 8-0! His performance rating was near 2900 and he did not lose any single match against any player. He also defeated 20 of 21 opponents at least once (except the 2008 World Blitz Champion Leinier Dominguez – both games were drawn).
21 of 22 players (except Kosteniuk) performed at 2600+ level and above and 2 players performed over 2800 (Carlsen and Anand). 14 players performed over 2700 (Carlsen, Anand, Karjakin, Kramnik, Grischuk, Svidler, Ponomariov, Leko, Mamedyarov, Morozevich, Gashimov, Aronian, Dominguez, and Bareev).
Carlsen scored the most wins with 28, followed by Anand, Karjakin, and Kramnik, all with 20 wins.
The oldest player is Karpov and the youngest is Carlsen. They split their match 1-1 with Karpov winning the first and Carlsen the second.
There are 4 World Champions / FIDE World Champions in this event. Judit scored 1-1 against Anand, 1-1 against Karpov, 1-1 against Ponomariov, and 1.5-0.5 against Kramnik.
The average rating of the 22 players are 2718. 26.40% of the games were drawn. Approximately 38.96% were won by White and 34.63% were won by Black.
Amazing. Can’t wait to see Magnus compete for the championship! He deserves the chance.
Surely you mean World Blitz Champion 2008 for Leinier..
With the recent results of the World Blitz Championship, Pearl Spring, and the Tal Memorial, and with Topalov sequestered in preparation, has the upcoming World Championship match lost some of its luster?
Carlsen won *28* games next to 20 by Anand and some others — and he must have lost a few more as well. Seems like he goes for the win.
Other nice facts:
Carlsen beat 8 players with both Black and White; only Karpov score no double victories.
Carlsen is the only player to suffer no double loss.
I know it’s only hand chess but my god , Carlsen was like a runaway train.
Very interesting facts, it looks Magus will be the World Champion very soon.
Age might be factor here as well. Anand had 12 points on the 1st day, 7 on Day-2, and 7 on Day-3. Carlsen and Karajkin had stronger performance on Days 2 and 3.
It’s a little cumbersome to get all the data into a spreadsheet. Would be cool to plot the performance over time for all the players.
