This is from the website Chessvibes (www.chessvibes.com): “Aerosvit tournament will be rated for the July 2008 rating list.”
Then came this later:
“The Executive Board in Antalya decided to have a clear deadline, except for events listed in the FIDE handbook, of the 15th of the respective previous month. Therefore, as this event finishes after the 15th it will not be rated for July.”
Now you have it! Thanks Peter and Chessvibes for the clarification.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Yes, I just saw this too. One time it’s yes, and then it’s no again. Another blow for FIDE’s credibility.
This means Ivanchuk moves into second above Carlsen in virtual ratings as Ivanchuk will get rounded up while Carlsen down in July ratings!
You know what this means?
Instead of world number 2, Carlsen will be dropping to world number 6 in July- actually dropping a ranking place since April!
Such a difference it makes due to how closely packed together the top 6 are!
Susan Polgar- this is a very good site- it is like a chess magazine that is continously updated rather having to wait for months! One can never read all the stream of articles you present! Well done on this site!
Ditto, and it’s free. You don’t have to pay $49 and wait for months for news and games like the USCF 🙂
Unfortunate for Magnus, but he still has so much ahead of him. I think the Anand situation was more problematic because of his seniority (whether or not he could maintain that rating). The sad part is that I’ve come to expect this wavering incompetence from FIDE – but as we saw in the last election, most people seem to prefer the status quo.
FIDE is deprecating his own credibility. The trend will be that in the future the Live Ratings will be more accurate, useful, and popular than the FIDE list itself, at least regarding the top elite
so let’s get this straight, FIDE has us wait three months between list updates and when the list is published it isn’t a true reflection of the standings? time to get a new governing body for chess
It is pretty pathetic that FIDE cannot publish rating weekly or at least monthly on the web. This is the twenty first century for crying out loud. They still uses the outdated system from the 1950’s.
Why dont FIDE pay Hans Arild Runde and include his live rating on official site in addition to official one, or they should have their own live rating or weekly rating. Or as it’s been happening chess magazines and websites should start refering to this live rating often and shuld give importance so that significance of “official FIDE rating” is minimized.
This delay is actually good for Magnus, as it is easier to gain Elo-points from a lower rating. Next time he can be in the 2800 thanks to FIDE’s delay.
“Live” lists are fun to watch.
Periodic, slow, “official” lists are important for organizing events.
