Ludington’s 56th annual youth chess tournament attracted 72 young contestants and their parents to the Ludington High School cafeteria Saturday morning.
Among the crowd were Adam, 9, and Lindy Murphy, 7, of Ludington, who got in a practice game against each other while waiting for the brackets to be formed for their age group.
“Not a ton, but we do play it with my dad a lot,” Lindy said about her chess experience.
The Ludington Optimist Club sponsors the event and club member Tracy Thompson said Saturday’s crowd was the biggest the competition has attracted in 10 years.
“We do it to provide a good amateur chess tournament for northern Michigan,” Thompson said. “It was started by the Optimists as one of our youth programs.”
