STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wise moves will get you far.
So says Bobby Digi, music producer/nightclub owner/nonprofit founder.
He’ll share some of the smartest plays he’s been making since he was a kid June 27, during the Give Back Youth Chess Tournament in Tappen Park at Bay and Water streets, Stapleton.
The free event, dropping noon-4 p.m., is open to all ages and is sponsored by Bobby Digi LLC, the Staten Island YMCA, Castle Day Care II and Waregeeks, in partnership with the city Parks Department.
“The game of chess is a game of patience, a game of strategy,” says Digi, who is producing the event for his youth-focused Island Voice nonprofit. “If they are able to learn the game, then they’ll be able to apply it to their daily lives.”
The Staten Island Chess Club will lend a hand to teach beginners. First place wins $100 and second place nabs a chess T-shirt designed by graphic designer Mike Cruz.
The chess tournament coincides with Digi’s 34th birthday.
“My mom taught me when you celebrate your birthday, in doing so you must always look around to those who are less fortunate, not even financially, but knowledge-wise,” says Digi, who learned to play chess at about 7 years old in the Park Hill section of Clifton.
