Back in August 2013, I approached the organizers of the Chess World Cup in Tromsø (Norway) about my idea of a new interactive fan friendly style of LIVE commentary. They agreed and my co-commentator Lawrence Trent and I immediately implemented it.
I also approached the organizers of the World Championship in Chennai about this idea. They also consented. My co-commentators here (GM Ramesh RB, IM Lawrence Trent, IM Tania Sachdev) also agreed to this concept. Therefore, this new style was carried on to Chennai.
The idea is to provide fun and informative commentary aimed at the mainstream viewers and players of all levels/ages, instead of the tradition detailed analysis for more advanced players only. In addition, social media is being actively used to engage the fans.
Even though the responses have been overwhelming positive, and the viewership numbers have shattered all past records, many in the chess establishment are still working hard to bring the old way back for the elite players only, and not for everyone.
Please vote and let us know what you think. Do you prefer the new style of interactive commentary for everyone or do you want the old traditional way of straight detailed analysis for high level players only?
(Please understand that this poll has nothing to do with the technical aspect as I have no control of any of it. I simply ask about the more interactive / friendly style vs detailed computer like analysis.)
Thank you for voting.
Did you enjoy the Anand-Carlsen WC new style of LIVE commentary? |

Who cares about 99%. Chess politicians only care about the elite.
I honestly don’t see what the problem is here at all. Your commentary style seems fine to me and is accessible to everyone. 99.9%
of the “chess” public are not elite players and never will be.That’s who your commentary style reaches. It’s pleasant, informative and human. Now you can go to some sites..Look at Stockfish evals and troll all day long long …some people like that. (I don’t), but who cares? I just don’t go there..well sometimes I do. Then there’s the old style format, still readily available and I go there as well. The point is, in this hyper communication age there is room for everyone. Chess is notorious for intellectual snobbery and that’s a little sad. I mean look, you think the NBC analists at NFL games REALLY know the game as well as the guys on the field? Even the retired players? You’;re simply filling a void that’s existed for a long time with a nice personality. If some people tdon’t like it…they don’t have to watch. Some people will ALWAYS find something to complain about, no matter what you do. Your viewing numbers speak for themselves.
Keep it up, you’re doing fine.
