Q: Wasn’t the championship chess match with Bobby Fischer also played in the historic Peace House?
Robert W. Quelch
A: The World Chess Championship match between Fischer and Boris Spassky of the USSR in Reykjavík in 1972 took place in the Laugardalshöll arena. Fischer went on to win what was dubbed the Match of the Century.
Höfði is where the Reagan-Gorbachev summit took place in 1986, marking the beginning of the end of the Cold War. A new Peace Center will be housed in the building when it launches operations in the autumn.

Even though Magnus is the first decent World Champion we have had since Kasparov and Karpov I do not think the modern generation understands the magnitude of dominance that Fischer displayed from 1970-1972. No one, not Karpov or Kasparov and not even Magnus has been able to achieve such a crushing distance between his peers as Fischer did. Mathematically just go take a look at the distance between Fischer and second place Spassky on rating list and you will see what I mean. The modern ratings are inflated and we all have a tool to verify the strength of players scientifically. Just analyze the games played with Komodo and you will see that modern GM’s blunder at a much greater rate than Fischer and no one can match the accuracy of Capablanca! They played middlegames and endgames at a much higher level than today’s players. It is a joke to place these modern players with 2800+ ratings as better players than Lasker, Capablanca or Alekhine. The games they played leave undeniable proof of their chess knowledge compared to error prone modern games played by today’s players. Don’t argue with me, argue with Komodo and impartial judge of chess play.
